Is Najib throwing out a red herring? | Free Malaysia Today

Until polls reform committee's suggestions are implemented, the PM should not call for a general election, says PKR's Elizabeth Wong.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's Parliamentary Select Committee on electoral reforms should not be a "red herring", said a PKR supreme council member.

Elizabeth Wong said that if Najib was sincere about electoral reforms, he will wait until the committee submits its report and implement its suggestions.

"He must not preempt the committee's work and call for a general election," said Wong.

"Even at the state level, when we tried to implement the Freedom of Information Enactment, it took the state assembly nine months of intensive process," she added.

Najib yesterday announced a Parliamentary Select Committee, comprising opposition and government MPs, to look into electoral reforms.

He said that the committee was set up in order to put to rest suspicions that there is manipulation by the government in the country's polls process.

Wong, who is also Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman, said: "The committe has to be established in parliament which convenes on Oct 3, and it will take up to a year to release its findings.

"We hope that it is not a red herring. Najib should give a committment that the general election will not be called before the suggestions of the committee are implemented."

Wong also said Najib's announcement of the Parliamentary Select Committee showed that the demands of electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 had basis.

Foreigners forced sign pledge of allegiance

On another matter, PKR women's wing chief Zuraida Kamaruddin alleged that the BN was using the 6P amnesty programme to secure more votes in the general election.

Zuraidah said an internal investigation revealed that foreigners were forced to sign a pledge of allegiance to the Umno/BN government before being granted amnesty.

A four-paragraph form with contents of an 'oath of allegiance', directed specifically to Muslim foreigners was shown to the media today.

Zuraidah suspects it is aimed at Indonesians. It starts with the Islamic salutation, "Bismillahhirahmanirrahim", followed by spaces allocated for names and a pledge that the person will be loyal to the Agong, Sultans and the country.

The second paragraph reads: "My husband /wife/children and I will support and vote for Umno/Barisan National without conditions".

The last paragraph states that this matter will remain a secret

It does not carry any government/official insignia, neither does it contain any agency insignia or details.

When asked about the authencity of the forms, Zuraidah believed it was genuine as her team had attained it first hand when "we took part (acting) as one of them (foreigners)".

"We have about 10 witnesses and are compiling more evidence before we bring them (the foreign witnesses) out to expose that such a thing is going on," said the Ampang MP.

She said the investigations were a follow-up to electoral irregularities in the Sepang, Shah Alam and Hulu Selangor areas and the syndicate involved was from one of these areas.

"We want to expose Umno's dirty tactics to show that it will do anything to remain in power. We urge BN alliance members to state their stand on the matter."

She called for the 6P amnesty programme to be halted immediately.
