Hulu Kelang Lad: A Comet Appears

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 09:08 AM PDT

Okay, this is another random song that I picked from my mp3 player to be dissected in here. Unlike many other songs, the lyrics of this song can't be easily made out. It's like Viva La Vida. It's not only the words, but the story and culture that lie within this song. The point of view. The perspective. A lot of things that seem strange to me. Or else, I am simply an idiot. Let's hope that that's not true.

Anyway the title of the said song is A Comet Appears by The Shins. I first listened to this song, well, a fragment of it, in one of the American TV shows called Chuck. It was featured in a scene in which Sarah walked and sat next to Chuck who was sitting facing the sunrise on a beach, and told him to trust her. I am positive that that scene is the first episode, when Chuck learns that his life is never going to be the same ever again.

I am still trying to figure out the meaning of this song. Like I said, it's beyond dictionary-flipping. With that said, I had to copy the lyrics from a website. SongMeaning. I think in this website people will pool their knowledge and opinions about songs and discuss. Interpretation can be wildly subjective and inconsistent, so perhaps if you help each other, we could all then reach to a single conclusion at the end about the meaning of the songs. Even though we could just ask the writers/composers to explain. Can we do that?

A Comet Appears Lyrics

One hand on this wily comet,
Take a drink just to give me some weight,
Some uber-man I'd make,
I'm barely a vapour

They shone a chlorine light on,
A host of individual sins,
Let's carve my ageing face off,
Fetch us a knife,
Start with my eyes,
Down so the lines,
Form a grimacing smile,

Close your eyes to corral a virtue,
Is this fooling anyone else?
Never worked so long and hard,
To cement a failure,

We can blow on our thumbs and posture,
But the lonely is such delicate things,
The wind from a wasp could blow them,
Into the sea,
With stones on their feet,
Lost to the light and the loving we need,

Still to come,
The worst part and you know it,
There is a numbness,
In your heart and it's growing,

With burnt sage and a forest of bygones,
I click my heels,
Get the devils in line,
A list of things I could lay the blame on,
Might give me a way out,

But with each turn,
It's this front and centre,
Like a dart stuck square in your eye,
Every post you can hitch your faith on,
Is a pie in the sky,
Chock full of lies,
A tool we devise,
To make sinking stones fly,

And still to come,
The worst part and you know it,
There is a numbness,
In your heart and it's growing.

And listen to the song here:

What do you think? I hope you like it too. This song is one of the sort that makes me think about what kind of life that I am living right now and the mistakes I've made and keep making. When the song plays I would ponder about a lot of things, particularly about someone that I really care about. That has nothing to do with the lyrics does it? Anyway...

Hope you enjoyed it. =)
