Pre-Sepang catch-up with Paul di Resta

Paul di Resta scored a season-opening point in Australia on Sunday, perhaps through luck more than anything else after what had been a tough weekend for Force India. Heading to Malaysia and Sepang, the Scot hopes for more…

Paul, you got your season underway with a point in Melbourne - do you think you can deliver a repeat performance in Sepang this weekend?
That will certainly be the aim. We picked up a point in Melbourne at the very last moment, but we were quite fortunate with the way the last lap unfolded and so it was a nice surprise. As I said after the race, we struggled for consistent race pace in Melbourne and it will be interesting to see if we can improve on that this weekend on a circuit with very different characteristics.

How have you spent your time between the races?
I left Melbourne on Sunday night because it was important to get to Malaysia and start acclimatising as soon as possible. Sepang will be a tough fitness test and I'll see how well the work over the winter has prepared me. I definitely feel in good shape at the moment.

Would you say the Malaysian Grand Prix is the most physically demanding?
It's up there alongside Singapore as one of the toughest races of the year, simply because of the heat and humidity. While you are driving it's not too bad, because you get some air flow through the car, but you really feel the heat when you're sitting in the car in the garage with the heat soak from the engine and the tyres. That's when you're most uncomfortable in the cockpit.

Di Resta hoping tyres work better in Sepang | News | F1 Pulse

Force India is expecting that it won't face the tyre troubles it experienced at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix during this weekend's race at Sepang.

Paul di Resta, who was the sole Force India driver to finish the race at Melbourne, had admitted that he was struggling for pace at the start of each stint hurting his overall pace.

But the Scot is hoping that the Malaysian Grand Prix would spell a different tale.

"I think we have experienced similar problems with some of the winter tests. We already have a bit of an idea," di Resta told F1Pulse.com "Australia was going to be a bit cooler that we would like it to be. The surface is obviously a bit smoother.

"At Sepang, the big difference is the actual temperature of the track. It's going to be in the region of 45 to 50 degrees," he went on. "Already we are hoping that's going to be a benefit for us and hopefully we'll see some more strengths of our car that we saw in much of testing at some tracks."

Di Resta however insisted that he wasn't too worried about the Pirellis this year and was evasive regarding the team's prime weakness this season.

"I am not going to say exactly where it is but we have a structure in place (to resolve it)," he said. "We have seen the reports from last year and we will continue down the path that we think is going to help us in the race situation. After one race it's a difficult thing to analyse but we'll get more of an idea after Malaysia."

The 25-year-old, now in his second season in Formula 1, was also not concerned about being out-qualified in Melbourne by teammate Nico Hulkenberg, who didn't have a race seat last year.

The difference between the two was nearly eight-tenths in Q2 but di Resta reminded that there were too many factors involved at Albert Park during the session to make a judgement.

"There was a mistake as I had been released into traffic during qualifying and lost a lot of time on the out-lap, which didn't get the tyres up to temperature to start the qualifying lap. And that's mainly been the issue during the race and qualifying," di Resta explained.
