Hulu Kelang Lad: Attitude and altitude

Your attitude will always determine your altitude in life

This is a quote that I have adopted years ago to be my philosophy in life. It says nothing about doing something such as flying an aircraft or picking your nose or emptying your bowel. That's the best part of it. It's not a quote in which a lengthy to-do-list is enshrined, unlike "an apple a day, keeps the doctors away." That's going to be too difficult to adopt. Meaning that the essence of this quote would be the importance of attitude in life.

I don't mean to patronise, but you do know that altitude refers to height right? It could then be a metaphor of your position in life. Position in life doesn't refer to any specific position, corporate ladder, salary, wealth or health. Let's just say it's the collective of all aspects in life, measured with your level of satisfaction with your life, or simply put, your level of happiness.

How attitude affects our life?

Say you finally get your dream job that really pays well. With more than enough monthly income, you could provide for your family, donate to charity and do things that you've been longing to do and so on. Therefore, with all these liberating factors around, you will finally be happy, and hence the higher you get in your altitude, the happier or more contented you are with your life.

Now then, the question is, when does the attitude come in? In my opinion, our attitude comes in to give effect to our lives almost all the time. However, in this case, our attitude would play such a significant role in getting us our dream job. By yearning to get hired with that employer for that particular post, we would have to work hard to make the cut for it. We would study hard, take extra courses to give ourselves the competitive edge so that we are more marketable. Eventually, we get hired, and we will feel happy and euphoric.

Hence, with the right attitude, with could grasp the desired altitude in life. This could be the simplest and most cliché example of how attitude determines your fate.

Right attitude but no success, low altitude?

However, someone may then say, sometimes people with the 'right' attitude don't get to accomplish or materialise their dreams. I am not sure if this is a proper example, but take Aung San Suu Kyi for instance. She relentlessly fights for democracy in her country, a goal she has yet to see through, even after decades of arduous battle. Also, Ninoy Aquino's assassination during his return home to topple down a dictator, Ferdinand Marcos. This may seem from the outside as a failure. Okay, for this one, his fight did come to fruition one day when his wife, Corazon Aquino, decided to continue what her husband had started and died for. However at that time, people might feel that Aquino had died in vain, he didn't succeed.

In my opinion, these heroes who fought for democracy, even though they fall, they have actually reached the highest altitude possible in life. I still remember in an interview not long before his murder, Mr Aquino said to the press that he had anticipated something bad was going to happen to him upon his return to Philippine from the United States (where he lived in exile) to liberate his country and people from dictatorship. I was so touched at how determined he was in his quest for democracy that nothing will stop him, even death.

Simpler applications?

Anyway, this quote can also be applied in our daily lives, even after at a molecular level. No matter how bad things can be, with the right attitude, we will always stand at a great altitude, at a great level of satisfaction in life. I think we can call it a positive attitude. Don't be negative, be positive.

You could spill coffee on your pants and still be okay with it. Instead of cursing at the mug, coffee and the coffee maker, or even to your colleague, you could just sit back and laugh about it. So instead of having your mood or day ruined by some inevitable accident of coffee-spilling, it could be something that brightens the rest of your day!

Whose quote?

I first heard of this quote from my younger brother. Smart isn't he? And I think this is also one of the quotes that I could really relate to. It's just unfortunate that I am not so sure who did come up with this brilliant phrase. Whoever you are, that's freaking cool man!

Don't give me attitude! What?

Attitude could also refer to Attitude Sickness. =)

Done!

Hope you enjoyed it.
