Chapter 26

Kuala Kubu Baru Forum on Sunday 11/11/2007 @ 8. 00p. m.

Tamil Selvam of Kuala Kubu Baru (KKB) was a rather quiet and reserved personality. Like most other Hindraf supporters, Selvam was one of those who had called us and then came to see us. Waytha Moorthy on one of the Fridays when he was driving back after work from the legal firm he was working for in Ipoh dropped by to meet Selvam and his Kuala Kubu Baru Hindraf committee members at Selvam's house in Rawang. About 30 people attended this meeting. Before agreeing to give a date to organise a local forum, we normally ask to see the organising committee of at least ten to fifteen people. We don't give them a date otherwise. Selvam was keen in organising a forum in Rawang/KKB but we did not have any weekend dates before the 25th day of November 2007. But Selvam and his people insisted on one. The only date we had was the 11th day of November 2007, that was the Sunday immediately after Deepavali which fell on a Thursday. As Selvam insisted on this date, we then decided to turn it into a Deepavali get together cum forum thinking that we could get people to turn up that way. We had cautioned Selvam of a possible poor turnout as people would still be in the Deepavali mood. On hindsight it was not quite a good decision as the turnout was poor on that day. We should have decided on another date. But another date would mean after the 25th day of November 2007 Rally.

Farmers Market | Kuala Kubu Baru | Selangor | Tourism Malaysia

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Much of the action in laid-back Kuala Kubu Baru is centred around the Farmers Market, especially on weekends and public holidays, writes SHANTI GUNARATNAM

KUALA Kubu Baru's claim to fame is that the small town in Selangor is the jump-off point to Fraser's Hill. It has always played second fiddle to the hill resort though it has its own simple attractions for those who seek a pleasurable outing.

kuala kubu bahru town
The old charm of Kuala Kubu Bahru

Fraser's Hill towers above this rustic town dotted with matured trees with canopies that provide shade from the sun. The biggest attraction in Kuala Kubu Baru is the early morning Farmers Market which is held daily but it comes alive particularly on weekends and public holidays with the added presence of out-of-towners who don't mind travelling out of the way to enjoy simple local food.

Here you can find nasi dagang, nasi lauk, garlic murukku and various traditional kuih like tepung bungkus, which is always available at this market. Elsewhere, tepung bungkus is usually sold during the fasting month only.

Scenic Drive

The fun begins with the drive along the old road to Kuala Kubu Baru. If you're driving from Kuala Lumpur, the journey takes slightly more than an hour. It is best to start early in the morning to enjoy the view of mist-covered greenery of the main range and smaller hills enveloped by passing clouds.

You can wind down your car windows as the air is cool in the morning. The weather and "feel" of Kuala Kubu Baru are very similar to that of Taiping. It rains here often especially in the late afternoon (another reason why you should get an early start). In any case, the market starts as early as 6.30am or 7am and packs up by noon.

Food Galore

At the market, expect to join long queues especially at popular stalls selling local delicacies. Kelantanese Norhayati Hassan, who sells nasi dagang, nasi kerabu, nasi lauk and laksam, says business is very good on weekends.

Sunday Market, Banting
The scene at the farmers market will be similar to this one.

Customers form long lines to buy her nasi kerabu and nasi dagang, served with ikan tongkol curry, pickled garlic and a special sambal cooked with a family recipe.

The rice dishes are sold from RM2, depending on what dishes you choose.

Those who love traditional kuih will not want to miss the tepung bungkus. It is made from rice flour with brown sugar and coconut filling and wrapped in coconut leaf.

If you love this kuih, look out for Fatimah Hassan's stall. She makes and sells it daily with other traditional delicacies but her best-seller is still tepung bungkus.

Each piece of tepung bungkus is sold at 30 sen, and on weekends, Fatimah, whose stall is next to Norhayati's, sells some 200 pieces.

DSC_5246
Bargain is a typical scene.

"We have people coming from as far as Kuala Lumpur for this delicacy. This kuih is hard to find outside the fasting month but since so many people like it, I don't mind taking the trouble to wake up early to make it."

Another popular stall is that run by Thinagaran Ayasamy who sells both normal and garlic-flavoured murukku, pakora, omopoddi and other fried Indian delicacies. These are made by his maternal uncle in Cheras and they are sold at RM1 per 100g.

"We have been running this stall for over 10 years. Initially, we sold sugar cane water and young coconut water. When my uncle started supplying the fried delicacies to us, we decided to sell them at the stall too," he says.

At Haji Moin Shamsuddin's stall, you will find many varieties of salted fish and dried prawns – all brought in from Tanjung Karang, Selangor.

Among the items on sale are salted ikan kurau, ikan parang and black pomfret – yes, black pomfret, which is a rare find as far as salted fish is concerned. A big salted black pomfret costs less than RM7.

While the market offers many local delicacies, those planning to do their marketing here can also buy fresh vegetables, seafood and fruit at very affordable prices.

Getting To The Farmers Market

From Kuala Lumpur, you can take the scenic old road to Kuala Kubu Baru. Those who take the North-South Highway can exit at the Rawang interchange. From there, the road will rejoin the old road to Kuala Kubu Baru. The Farmers Market is located opposite Maybank in the centre of town.

Semanis Sebiji Strewberi: Cik Stoberi Mengintai kembali :)

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 07:04 AM PDT

Rasanya dekat 2 minggu saya tak coretkan sesuatu disini. Baiklah, saya listkan kenapa saya menghilang selama 2 minggu ini :)

1) Class utk ACCA sudah bermula. Walaupun class x pack, tapi class utk paper tersebut sangat heavy. Dan menyebabkan keletihan melampau. Setiap hari, except thursday ada class for P2 (nama paper) selama 4jam. Kau bayang 1 class 4jam. Jammed kepala otak aku. Kalau leka 1 min je, memang susah nak catch up balik. heh, bila fikir2 balik, scary pulak amek ACCA ni, HAHAHA

2) Atas nasihat ketua program (KP) ACCA, kami (semua batch saya) dibenarkan amek 2paper sahaja utk 1st sem ini. Siapa amek 3paper, kena drop paper ke 3. Jadi punahlah harapan saya nak complete-kan ACCA ini within 1year. Tapi bagus jugak KP suruh amek 2papers sahaja. 2 ni pon nak menangissssssssssss dibuatnya. Susah siotttttttt T______T

3) Biasiswa JPA xdisambung. Kena apply yang baru. Mana nak cekau duittttttt ni weiiiii? Lagi 2weeks KP suruh prepare bank draft yang telah di-convert mata wang Pounds Sterling utk urusan registration fee, exemption fee & exam fee. If payment & others documents required lambat sampai UK, rate for fees will be different. Kalau setakat 1,2 Pounds, buleh tahan lagi. Tapi kalau 4, 5 ratus Pounds (RM 2.5K) beza, xke kau makan megi kerat 2 utk sehari? HAHAHA. Estimation RM kena standby is RM 4.3k. Nak selamat, standby RM 4.5k due to fluctuation in exchange rate & service charge imposed by the bank. InsyaAllah saya buat bank draft Isnin depan. Harap2 Isnin ini exchange rate for Pounds PALING murah. Save banyakkkkkk duit RM. HAHAHA

4) Selama ulang alek Gombak Shah Alam 2 minggu ini, sumpah penat. Nasib baik clas xpack sangat. Madam MC. Prftttttttttttttttt T____T. Nasib xteruskan perjalanan :P

5) Kos sehari saya ulang alek is RM 37. (Petrol, tol, makan). Kalau 2minggu, sila darab sendiriiiiii T____T

Padahal badan letih :(

8) Sekarang saya di Gombak. Ikotkan xnak balik sebab dah penat 2minggu ulang alek. Tapi mlm tadi tibe2 xsedap hati. Balik jugak la. HEHE.

For this moment, ini je yang saya ingat. HAHAHA. kalau ada masa, saya update lagi ye.

Ok dah, nak study. Next month ada test. HOHO
Pehhhhh, kena "warming up" kan otak cepat2 nih, HAHAHA

Hulu Kelang Lad: An Evening with MLMers

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 11:15 PM PDT

I am deeply sorry if you are an MLMer yourself. But I've made up my mind and come up with a verdict that MLM will always be a lie.

My personal opinion about MLM is that, it really sucks because of the products. People who participate have to promote products that sometimes they don't even use.

Anyway, last month, I was out and about looking for a job at Taman Permata. However, one job advertisement that really enticed me was called a referral specialist. It said in the flyer there that the earning could go up to RM 200 per week for full timer and RM 1ooo per week for part timer.

I wasted no time, quickly I sent an message to the person and we agreed to meet up on Friday after the prayer. I went home and did a background check of what does a referral specialist do. I could conclude that this job actually requires me to be articulate and sociable. Not only that, I'd have to assist people to understand the field in which I am a specialist in. The question that hit me at that time of course, what field would that be?

However, I already fall in love with this job because it would require me to read more. I think I can do that since I am now unemployed and sit in front of my computer 24/7. I could use some of that time to read stuffs and informations.

After the Friday prayer I drove to the shopping mall as promised, 1 hour in advance to prepare myself. I brought my lappy so that I could show off the this 'interviewer' that I'd make the perfect cut for the job. It says in the job advertisement that candidate should have a laptop.

Finally, the person called and asked me to go to one of the restaurants. I hastily walked to that direction, and there sitting, three men, and one of them waving at me. That was Zain (bukan nama sebenar/not his real name) the person I have been contacting regarding this job.

Very much to my surprise, and utter dismay, came along with this Zain was seemingly an older man, and another lad of Zain's age. I shamelessly ordered an iced-Milo, for which they were paying. =)

I was disappointed already when that older guy who did the talking. Zain just sat beside him, nodding to each and every word this man said. He used the tone that showed how brilliant and knowledgeable he was. It had not been 5 minutes yet, I wanted to leave already.

He went on to give his motivational speech about doing business and that crap. I interjected once asking that I thought this job was called a referral specialist. Then he replied, it is. I was like, how come? Well, all you need to do is find people to join our programme (the products) and 'refer' them to us. What the ....

He also said that I had to find people to start earning. No it's not an MLM, but I had to find people to start earning. Not only that, I had to pay an amount of RM 200 to get started. That was if I wanted to do it part time. To be a full timer however, the fee would be RM 800.

He did explain to me all the differences between this programme and an MLM programme but I didn't pay attention because all I wanted was to leave. I didn't want to be rude for they had paid my drink, so I decided to stick around a bit longer. Little did I know that that was such a mistake.

By sitting there longer, I let my mind exposed to all luring and deceiving lies that these people were trying to jam inside my head. In fact, that older man actually talked more about how enjoyable doing that job instead of what the product really is. He told me he forgot to bring the details of the programme in the car.

He claimed that the product that he was selling was a financial literacy programme. It is conducted somewhere in Nilai and that's all that I had to know. I knew at that time that that it was rubbish. How could you expect people to believe what you say with no evidence?

Apart from that, he kept coming up with stupid principles or logics that were clearly shallow and nonsensical, but I felt like I was being brainwashed to accept them nonetheless. For instance, he asked me to put myself in his shoes. If I were him, an MLMer who wants to find a downline, would you want your potential downline ask you few or many questions?

The way I saw it, that question is dumb itself. Of course your potential downline wants to ask thousands of questions to them. Not only that, I personally, would make sure they understand what they are getting themselves into, provided that what I am doing is legit. So is it not legit?

Well, there were many other things that he said that didn't make any sense. Nevertheless, slowly, I succumbed to his convincing words. In fact, for a moment I thought, how can these fine people be liars? That can't be. They are too kind. So eventually I agreed to join them.

I think what I really found seductive was when he talked about a lot of people are wasting their time and money studying. Seriously. We could just join this programme and become rich in no time. Considering the fact that I dropped out of a medic school in Ireland, I really had this urge to show to my friends who are still there that I am not left behind. I could become rich and this could be the way. What a fool I was. =(

The fee was RM 200 but I didn't have that much cash, so I paid them RM 50 first. Next week I'll be going to the financial workshop and I'll pay the rest of the fee then. So when I got home, my mother talked some sense into my head. Or more like, she hammered them into my skull.

I couldn't accept what my mother told me. They can't be liars. They were too kind. Their words were convincing and they also said that they are not fraud. What the hell am I thinking? Those arguments aren't sensible at all. Of course liars' words are convincing. Of course they are kind. And most importantly, of course they will say they aren't fraudulent.

Weeks later, I came across this blog and in one post the author explained what an MLM is and why is it not legit. It actually says that MLM is haram. That's what he says, go and check out that post. Don't mind the vulgarity of the words he uses. I think his explanation really makes sense.

Whatever it is, this is just my story. I am not trying to force my ideas on you. I just think that that whole experience of meeting up with fellows who tried to do so is truly horrible. And my advice would be don't trust any job that offers you ridiculously high salaries. That's the ugly truth. =(

Mancing di Selat Panjang Sungai Kakap, Gigi dan Rahang Dulhan ...

Posted: 24 May 2011 04:10 AM PDT

Hasanuddin memperlihatkan luka yang diderita Dulhan, anaknya, setelah dikibas buaya di Sungai Selat Panjang, Senin (23/5).

PONTIANAK – Mancing udang di perairan Selat Panjang, Sungai Kakap, Hasanuddin, 55, dan Dulhan, 16, anaknya serta Fauzi, 39, dikibas buaya, Sabtu (21/5). Bahkan Fauzi tewas tenggelam.

"Dulhan anak saya giginya patah dikibas ekor buaya.

Dua hari kemudian, Senin (23/5) dini hari, tubuh Fauzi mengapung tak bernyawa.

Fauzi tinggal di Jalan Ya' M Sabran, Gang Nangka, Tanjung Hulu, Pontianak Timur. Fauzi sering mengikut Hasanuddin memancing udang.

That's the least you could do to save your life. Amin.
